The Peace Pipe
The use of the Peace Pipe is sacred and sovereign act to the Native people. It is believed to be “the key to the other world”. As the smoke rises to the heavens as an offering, the creator bestows a blessing upon the people
The Bear
This a beautiful symbol featuring the bear. This image is one which represents both “The Bear Clan”, also known as the Woodland Bear, and the healing qualities of the bear. Native people lived in spiritual harmony with the natural world. They believed everything possessed a soul or spirit and that they were given a special purpose by the Great Spirit. The bear is a symbol of great strenght, courage and authority. Because of it’s human-like qualities, the bear was referred to as “Elder Kinsman”. But it was also referred to as “Keeper of the Medicines” because the bear lived in, and was the boss of, the forest. In the forest was where we found the herbs used for medicines. Long ago, when a bear was killed by a warrior, it was believed the bears spirit, strenght and courage entered his body. In battle, as in life, bear claws were worn as a symbol and constant reminder of his beliefs. The clan symbols come from the three worlds, the waterworld, the earthworld and the sky world. The bear is the most majestic of all animals, and the largest of the earth animals. It is considered to be a great protector of the people.
