The Turtle To the Native people the turtle represents Mother Earth or the entire world. The squares on the turtle’s back represents Nations of the world. The lines connecting the squares are like blood lines connecting all Nations as one. The lines run together to form a circle-the great circle of life. Native people believed thet the world was created on the back of the turtle. She floated lazily in the sun and some seeds landed on her back. Some dust also fell and the rains came. The seeds germinated and the roots grew around her shell. Out of the back of the turtle came all of humanity. They refer to north America as Turtle Island. They say that there is a paw of the turtle up near Hudson’s bay, and a paw near Alaska. One near the baja in Calafornia and another is the Florida Panhandle. We are known as turtle riders because we ride the back to the turtle. The turtle is the symbol for longevity and also of patience. The earth, the turtle, is know as Mother, for she sustains and nourishes. She gives power to the people through her healing forces. The turtle was a calander for native peoples. On the back of a full grown turtle shell are 13 sections. Around the outside of the shell are 28 smaller truncations. If we multiply 13 x 28, we come out to 364, just one day short of our own calendar.
